Hatsu-moude

At Yushima-Tenjin shrine, Tokyo. Hatsu-moude means the year’s first visit (to the shrine). In Japan, we tend to see year’s first “something” as good thing or good fortune.

So flock of people visits shrines on new year. Yushima-tenjin is particulary known for the god of education or learning, so very popular with students.
